Visiting with the Past, Present and Future

Acoustic Hot Tuna wrapped up its August tour with some stops in Florida:

  • 08/03/11 Vinyl Music Hall Pensacola, FL
  • 08/04/11 The Plaza Live Orlando, FL
  • 08/05/11 Revolution Live Ft. Lauderdale, FL
  • 08/06/11 Skipper’s Smokehouse Tampa, FL

When we rolled into Tampa, for our show at Skipper’s Smokehouse, our very good friend, Marty Balin, met us at the venue. It was great to see Marty. Wished we could have spent more time with him. There is so much space to cover.

Marty lost his wife, Karen Deal, in a tragic accident last year. She was a wonderful woman, full of life and music. She was the keyboard player for the 1980’s Tampa area band, the Mod Squad. Peace and Blessings to her family and to Marty.

We also got to see former Fur Peace Ranch students, Colin Rocker and Zac Greenburg, a.k.a. Burlap Macks. The Burlap Macks are very talented young musicians with old souls. They put their own spin on the Americana sound and make new songs sound old and old songs sound new. It’s good stuff so be sure to check them out. They also do a kick ass version of Good Shepherd.

Here’s how the old guys do it:

Jimi Hendrix 1968 Winterland Show featuring Jack Casady to be Released

Experience Hendrix LLC and Legacy Recordings proudly announces four new titles representing the fourth wave of releases in the monumental Jimi Hendrix Catalog Project, available everywhere Tuesday, September 13. Included in this release is a 1968 Winterland Show (a 4 Disc Deluxe Box Set).

Winterland recording is drawn from six stellar shows recorded over three days (October 10, 11 and 12, 1968) at San Francisco’s historic Winterland Ballroom. These special performances celebrated the two year anniversary of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and came just as the groundbreaking album Electric Ladyland was released. Winterland presents some of Hendrix’s most spectacular guitar work and the four CD set (also available as eight 12″ vinyl LPs) is filled with rare live versions of classic songs such as “Manic Depression,” “Are You Experienced?,” “Tax Free,” and “Little Wing” that are not part of any other Sony Legacy release. Fans will also enjoy Hendrix’s dramatic interpretations of Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love” and Howlin’ Wolf’s “Killing Floor” [with the Experience joined by Jefferson Airplane bassist Jack Casady]

America’s Hippie Heritage

Check out the American Routes Show which features Jack, the epitome of hippie culture!

Tune in and turn on to our nation’s fringe heritage. Along with their spiritual forefathers, the beatniks and folkies, our hippie generation latched on to great music before them–from old-time country and bluegrass, bebop, blues and more–and created their own versions. We’re joined by Maria Muldaur who recalls making jug-band music in the West Village in the ’60s. Also, we speak with bass player Jack Casady, a founding member of the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna.

American Routes is a weekly two-hour public radio program produced in New Orleans, presenting a broad range of American music — blues and jazz, gospel and soul, old-time country and rockabilly, Cajun and zydeco, Tejano and Latin, roots rock and pop, avant-garde and classical. Now in our 12th year on the air, American Routes explores the shared musical and cultural threads in these American styles and genres of music — and how they are distinguished.
