Paul Lorin Kantner March 17, 1941 – January 28, 2016 – Signe Toly Anderson September 15, 1941 – January 28, 2016

Jack.Casady.Paul.Kantner

It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I say goodbye to an old friend. Paul was more than a friend, he was the pilot who flew Jefferson Airplane and later Jefferson Starship to unparalleled heights, beyond our wildest dreams, but not his. He had a vision. And he pursued that vision with relentless abandon.

When I arrived in San Francisco, I didn’t know anyone except Jorma. Paul warmly welcomed me to the city and into the band. And with a simple, “Let’s get started.” he set our musical journey in motion. He navigated the band through the music industry with self confidence and assurance like he had a map in his head and he knew the destination.

Of course when you’re adrift in the vast sea of the music industry, the crew gets restless and anxious. And our little mutinies were legendary. But Paul was steadfast in his belief that he could command the ship and lead it in new directions, which he did, and to much success. The crews changed over time of course but it was always Paul’s vision that steered the ship.

I would like to offer my condolences to Paul’s family, especially his children China, Gareth and Alexander. He will be greatly missed. But he will also be remembered and cherished by the legions of fans that he made at every port he landed. Fare thee well fair aviator.

Signe Toly Anderson September 15, 1941 – January 28, 2016

edit.signeanderson_0I would also like to extend my deepest sympathies to the family Signe Anderson. Signe was an instrumental part of Jefferson Airplane’s success. She gave JA that distinguishing 3-part harmony sound, with Paul and Marty. She was innovative with her voice. Signe’s time with the band was short lived, but her impact on Jefferson Airplane sound still resonates. Thankful that she no longer is in pain. She will be missed and fondly remembered.

Jefferson Airplane to Recieve Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award

The Recording Academy today announced its class of 2016 Special Merit Awards recipients. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipients are Ruth Brown, Celia Cruz, Earth, Wind & Fire, Herbie Hancock, Jefferson Airplane, Linda Ronstadt, and Run-D.M.C.; the Trustees Award honorees are John Cage, Fred Foster and Chris Strachwitz; and EMT and Dr. Harvey Fletcher are Technical GRAMMY Award recipients.

”Each year, The Academy has the distinct privilege of honoring those who have greatly contributed to our industry and cultural heritage, and this year we have a gifted and brilliant group of honorees,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy.” Their exceptional accomplishments, contributions, and artistry will continue to influence and inspire generations to come.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award honors performers who have made contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording, while the Trustees Award recognizes contributions in areas other than performance. Both awards are determined by vote of The Recording Academy’s National Board of Trustees.

Marty Balin, Jack Casady, Spencer Dryden*, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, and Grace Slick comprised Jefferson Airplane, pioneers of counterculture-era psychedelic rock. Emerging from the San Francisco scene to achieve international mainstream success, performing at the three most famous American rock festivals of the 1960s — Monterey (1967), Woodstock (1969), and Altamont (1969). Their 1967 album Surrealistic Pillow is regarded as one of the key recordings of the “Summer of Love.” Two hits from that album, “Somebody To Love” and “White Rabbit,” are among Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

A special ceremony and concert celebrating the honorees will be held in the spring. Additional details regarding the ceremony will be announced in the coming weeks.
